Kasbah Tifoultoute near Ouarzazate: History, Films and Visit
A former Glaoui kasbah on a rocky spur above the Ouarzazate river, about 8 km west of town. Part restaurant and guesthouse, part ruin, and one of the best sunset terraces near Ouarzazate.

Kasbah Tifoultoute is a former Glaoui fortress on a rocky spur above the Ouarzazate river, about 8 km west of the town centre. Today part of it is a restaurant and guesthouse, part is slowly crumbling, and the roof terraces give one of the best views of the palm groves and the High Atlas near Ouarzazate. Allow about an hour, ideally in the late afternoon.
This short guide covers the history of the kasbah, the film story everyone tells about it, how to get there, what you actually see and how to fit it into a day around Ouarzazate.
Where Kasbah Tifoultoute is
The kasbah stands above the village of Tifoultoute, in the rural commune of Tarmigt, on a rise that dominates the valley of the Oued Ouarzazate. It sits west of the town, on the same side as Atlas Studios and the road to Marrakech, not on the Zagora road.
To get there by car, take the Marrakech road (N9) west out of town for about 6 km, then turn off towards Tifoultoute village; the kasbah is about 2 km further, clearly visible on its hill. From Residence Chay, about 2 minutes from the airport, the drive takes about 10 to 15 minutes. There is space to park near the entrance.
Without a car, a grand taxi or a private driver is the simplest option, as the kasbah lies outside the urban area. Agree the fare, and the waiting time if you want the driver to bring you back, before you set off. Our reception can help arrange a driver.
A short history of Tifoultoute
Like many kasbahs of the region, Tifoultoute has no precise founding date. Local tradition places the first fortified buildings in the 17th century, built to watch over the river and the routes running along it. The position was strategic: from the spur you can see far up and down the valley.
The kasbah later belonged to the Glaoui family, the lords of the southern Atlas, whose power came from Telouet and the mountain passes. Under Thami El Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakech from 1912 to 1956, it was enlarged and used as a residence and a place to receive guests, part of a network of family strongholds that included Kasbah Taourirt in the centre of Ouarzazate and Telouet itself.
After Moroccan independence in 1956 the Glaoui lost their properties, and like many earthen buildings Tifoultoute began to decay without constant upkeep. Part of it was later converted for hospitality, which is the main reason it is still standing in better shape than many kasbahs of the area.
Tifoultoute and the cinema
The story most often told about Tifoultoute is that it was turned into a hotel in the early 1960s to house the cast and crew of Lawrence of Arabia (1962), parts of which were filmed in Morocco. It is repeated by guidebooks and local guides alike, but we have not found a primary source from the production that confirms it, so treat it as a well-loved local account rather than documented fact. The same goes for claims that specific scenes were shot inside the kasbah.
What is certain is that Tifoultoute belongs to the landscape that made Ouarzazate a filming hub: earthen walls, palm groves and bare mountains within a short drive of the studios. If the film side of the region interests you, our guide to film and series locations around Ouarzazate lists the places with well documented productions, and Atlas Studios is only a few minutes away on the same road.

What you see today
Do not expect a museum. Tifoultoute is a lived-in building with a mixed character, and that is part of its appeal.
- The restaurant and courtyard: the restored section houses a restaurant and café, with tables set in the courtyard and the old rooms, decorated in traditional style.
- The guesthouse: some rooms have been renovated for overnight guests.
- The terraces: the main reason to come. From the roof you look over the river, the green strip of palms and gardens, the surrounding stony plain and, on clear days, the High Atlas to the north.
- The ruined sections: other parts of the kasbah are crumbling, which shows clearly how pisé (rammed earth) and mud brick construction erode once maintenance stops. Stay out of unstable areas and keep children close.
- The storks: white storks nest on the minaret of the village mosque just beside the kasbah, and you can watch them at eye level from the terraces in spring.
Practical tips for your visit
| Practical point | What to know |
|---|---|
| Distance | About 8 km west of Ouarzazate centre |
| From Residence Chay | About 10 to 15 minutes by car |
| Time needed | About 1 hour, more if you eat there |
| Entrance | Usually free with a drink or meal, small fee otherwise; ask at the door |
| Opening times | Not published reliably; check locally, especially for evening visits |
| Best time | Late afternoon and sunset |
- Go for sunset: the low light turns the walls and the valley golden, and the terrace is a calm place for a mint tea while it happens.
- Check before you go: the kasbah has had renovation work in recent years and parts may be closed. If you plan to eat there, it is worth asking in advance.
- Wear proper shoes: stairs are steep and uneven, and the ground around the ruined parts is loose.
- Be respectful in the village: Tifoultoute is inhabited. Ask before photographing people.
How to combine it with other sights
Tifoultoute fits easily into a half day west of Ouarzazate. A few combinations that work well:
- Atlas Studios and Tifoultoute: the studios in the afternoon, then the short drive to the kasbah for sunset.
- The Fint oasis: a green palm grove hidden in a desert valley south west of town, reached by a rough track; see our Fint oasis guide. Combine both in one afternoon if you have a suitable vehicle or a driver.
- On the way back from Aït Ben Haddou: the ksar is about 30 km further along the Marrakech road. Visit Aït Ben Haddou in the morning, then stop at Tifoultoute on the way back.
- A kasbah day: Kasbah Taourirt in town in the morning, when its rooms are cool and quiet, and Tifoultoute in the evening for the view. Taourirt has the restored painted interiors; Tifoultoute has the setting.

About 8 km west of the town centre, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car. From Residence Chay the drive is of a similar length.
Is there an entrance fee at Kasbah Tifoultoute?
Visitors who order something at the restaurant or café usually go up without paying extra, while others are asked a small fee. The amount and the rules can change, so ask at the door.
Can you stay overnight at Kasbah Tifoultoute?
Part of the kasbah operates as a guesthouse with a restaurant. Check current availability directly, as the building has gone through renovation work in recent years.
Is Kasbah Tifoultoute worth it if I have seen Kasbah Taourirt?
Yes, for different reasons. Taourirt is larger with restored painted rooms in the town centre; Tifoultoute is smaller and quieter, and its strength is the setting and the view over the river valley, especially at sunset.
