Fint oasis is a green palm grove and a string of four small villages along a river, enclosed by dark rock walls about 12 km south of Ouarzazate. It is close, but the last part of the way is a stony track, so plan on 30 to 45 minutes each way by car. A normal car can usually make it in dry weather if you drive slowly; after rain, or if you prefer not to risk a rental car, go with a local driver. This guide covers the route and track conditions, what to do in the oasis, the best time to go and a simple half-day plan.

What Fint oasis is like

Most of the land around Ouarzazate is open, stony plateau. Fint is the opposite: a narrow valley cut into dark rock, where a river (the oued Fint) keeps a ribbon of date palms, fig and olive trees and small walled gardens alive. From the plateau you barely see it until you are on the edge looking down, which is part of its charm.

The oasis is made up of four villages strung along the valley. Travel guides and local sources name them as Wangarf, Taharbilt, Timoula and Belghizi, with spellings that vary from one sign to the next. They are working farming villages, not a tourist site: people grow vegetables and fodder under the palms, channel the water through narrow irrigation ditches and keep goats and donkeys. Expect quiet, a few children on the paths, and the sound of water.

Compared with the big palm grove of Skoura, Fint is small and enclosed. The contrast between the black and ochre cliffs and the green floor of the valley is what makes it so photogenic, and the fact that it sees far fewer visitors than Aït Ben Haddou or the kasbahs in town makes it a good choice for a calm morning.

How to get to Fint oasis from Ouarzazate

The oasis lies south of the town, on the far side of the Ouarzazate river. As the crow flies it is about 12 km from the centre; by road and track the distance is a little longer, roughly 15 km depending on your starting point and the approach you take. Despite the short distance, allow 30 to 45 minutes each way, because the final stretch is unpaved and slow.

The usual route

From the centre, cross the river to the southern side of town (the Tabount and Tarmigt districts). The most common approach then follows the main road towards Zagora (the N9) for a few kilometres before turning off onto a smaller road signposted for Fint. The tarmac soon gives way to a track of compacted earth and stones, which leads across the plateau and then drops down towards the palm grove. Some drivers use a second approach from the Tabount side, also signposted. Navigation apps do not always agree on the best line, so look for the painted signs to Fint and ask in Tabount if in doubt.

Track condition and whether a normal car can go

Most of the unpaved section is an ordinary stony track, about ten kilometres long. In dry weather a small hire car can do it if you drive slowly, keep to the beaten line and take the rougher patches at walking pace. A higher car or a four-wheel drive is more comfortable and less stressful. Near the villages you may have to ford the shallow river; look at the depth and the exit before driving in, and if in doubt, park and walk.

Conditions change. After heavy rain, which is rare but can be intense, sections can wash out and the river can rise quickly. Check with your accommodation or a local driver the day before if there has been a storm. Also read your rental agreement: some contracts exclude damage on unpaved roads, which is worth knowing before you take a small car down a 4x4 track. Our guide to car hire and driving around Ouarzazate covers insurance and what to check.

Without a car

There is no regular public transport that drops visitors in the oasis. The practical solution is to hire a grand taxi or a driver with a four-wheel drive for a half day, with waiting time included. Settle the total price, the waiting time and whether you want to be dropped at the top or in a village before you leave. If you are staying with us at Residence Chay, the reception can help arrange a driver or a guide. For how taxis work in general, see our guide to taxis and buses in Ouarzazate.

What to do in Fint oasis

Walk through the palm grove

The main activity is simply walking. Paths run along the river and between the gardens, under palms and fruit trees, past irrigation channels and mud-brick walls. You can wander for an hour or follow the valley for longer. The paths are mostly flat, with the odd scramble over rocks or a step across a channel. Wear shoes you do not mind getting wet or dusty.

Follow the river

In most seasons the river is shallow and slow, spreading over sand and rock in several channels. It is pleasant to walk beside, and children enjoy the stepping stones. Water levels vary a lot through the year: in a dry autumn it can be a trickle, after spring rain it is wider and faster.

Climb to a viewpoint

For the classic picture of the oasis, climb one of the slopes on the side of the valley. From above you see the green strip of palms threading between the dark cliffs, the earthen houses on the edges, and on clear days the High Atlas far to the north. There is no single marked viewpoint; a guide or a villager can point you to an easy path. The slopes are loose and stony, so go slowly and avoid the edges.

See the villages

The villages are small clusters of earthen and newer houses on the edges of the palm grove. Walk through respectfully, greet people with a "salam alaykum", and you will often be greeted back. On the higher ground there are remains of older settlements, which show how villages once kept their houses out of the fertile valley floor and away from floods.

Lunch with a local family

There are no restaurants in the palm grove, but a few family guesthouses in the villages serve meals, typically a tagine with bread, salad and mint tea. These are not walk-in restaurants: arrange the meal in advance through a guide, your driver or your accommodation, and agree the price beforehand. Otherwise, bring a picnic and eat it in the shade, taking every scrap of rubbish back with you.

Films shot in and around Fint

Fint is often mentioned among the film locations of the Ouarzazate region, and it is easy to see why: a short drive from the studios, it offers a believable desert valley with water and palms. Local guides and regional travel sources commonly cite scenes from Lawrence of Arabia and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as having been filmed in the area. We have not found production records that confirm exactly which scenes were shot here, so treat these as well-known local stories rather than documented facts.

If cinema is a reason for your trip, the sets at Atlas Studios and our guide to film locations around Ouarzazate give you the documented side of the story.

The best time to visit Fint

Season

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons, with warm days and generally clear skies. Spring has the greenest gardens and usually more water in the river. In summer, temperatures in the region regularly climb well above 35 °C in the afternoon; the shade of the palms helps, but the drive and any climb to a viewpoint are hard work, so go very early. Winter days are often sunny and pleasant for walking, but mornings and evenings are cold. Our guide to the best time to visit Ouarzazate has month-by-month detail.

Time of day

Morning is best. The light is soft on the cliffs, it is cooler for walking, and village life is in full swing, with people working in the gardens and taking animals out. Late afternoon also gives warm light, but plan to be back on the tarmac before dark: the track is not lit and is much harder to read at dusk.

A half-day plan from Ouarzazate

This is the plan we suggest to most guests who want to see Fint without rushing.

TimeWhat to do
8:00Leave Ouarzazate with water, snacks and a hat; cross to the south side of the river
8:45Arrive at the top of the valley; stop for the first view down onto the palms
9:00 to 11:00Walk along the river and through the gardens; visit one of the villages
11:00Climb a short slope for the view over the oasis, or rest in the shade
12:00Lunch with a family (arranged in advance) or a picnic
13:30Drive back, reaching Ouarzazate by mid-afternoon

On the way back you can stop at Kasbah Taourirt in the late afternoon, when its earthen walls catch the best light. If you want to spend a whole day in oases, compare Fint with the larger Skoura palm grove and Kasbah Amridil, about 40 km east of town, but do not try to do both, plus Aït Ben Haddou, on the same day.

Respect and safety tips

  • Gardens are private: the plots under the palms belong to families. Stay on paths and along the river, do not walk across planted beds, and never pick dates or fruit.
  • Water channels: the narrow irrigation ditches are the lifeline of the oasis. Do not block them, step on their edges or wash anything in them.
  • Dress: these are conservative villages. Shoulders and knees covered is respectful, and it also protects you from the sun.
  • Photos: always ask before photographing people, especially women and children, and accept a no.
  • Children asking for sweets or pens: it is kinder not to hand things out on the path. If you want to help, buy a meal from a family or hire a local guide.
  • Heat and water: carry more water than you think you need, a hat and sun cream. There are no shops in the palm grove.
  • Floods: if storms are forecast in the mountains, stay away from the riverbed and do not try to drive through a flowing ford.
  • Phone signal: do not rely on mobile coverage everywhere in the valley. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
  • Rubbish: there is no collection in the palm grove. Take everything back to town.

Basing yourself in Ouarzazate

Fint is one of the few oases you can see properly in a morning, which makes Ouarzazate the natural base: you leave after breakfast and are back for a rest before the afternoon. Residence Chay is about 3 minutes from the town centre on the north side, with free private guarded parking and two-bedroom apartments with a kitchen, handy if you want to pack a picnic for the oasis. Questions travellers ask

Can you visit Fint oasis without a guide?

Yes. The track is signposted and the main paths through the palm grove are easy to follow. A local guide is useful if you want to understand the gardens and villages, find the viewpoints or arrange a meal with a family.

Is there an entrance fee for Fint oasis?

No. There is no ticket to enter the oasis. You only pay for what you arrange yourself, such as a guide, a driver or a meal, so agree those prices before you set off.

Are there restaurants or shops in Fint?

Not in the palm grove itself. A few family guesthouses in the villages serve meals, usually arranged in advance. Bring water and snacks in any case.

Can you swim in the river at Fint?

The river is shallow for most of the year and runs past people's homes and fields. Paddling is fine where it is clearly a public spot, but keep clothing modest and avoid washing or using soap in the water, which villagers use for irrigation.

Is Fint oasis worth it if I have already seen Skoura?

They feel quite different. Skoura is a wide, flat palm grove full of kasbahs, while Fint is a narrow, enclosed valley with dark cliffs, a river and small villages, and it sees far fewer visitors.
